In this article we will have a look at Preparing Your Teenager For Adult Life In 2025: A Few Things To Consider.
The adult world in 2025 is quite different to what it was even 10 years ago, and if you have a teenager approaching their later years, it’s important to do your best to equip them with the skills they need to navigate the new world.
Of course, that’s easier said than done. It all depends on what they want to do with their lives, and with career guidance being relatively sparse at most schools, they might not have a clear idea.
In this article, you’ll gain a few key insights into the key topics surrounding supporting your child through to their next stage of life.
Education
Naturally, the first element to establish is what they’re going to do education-wise. If they’ve just finished school, there are several options. They may wish to pursue higher education with the ambition to go to university, and if this is the case, they’ll need to do some A-Levels. Most places have good A-Level programs within the local sixth form colleges (check out the A Level courses in Blackpool, for example).
If not A levels, an apprenticeship may be more appropriate. This is a better choice if they want to go into a trade or something like catering.
Finance
Next up are financial matters – an aspect of adult life sorely missing from the traditional school curriculum.
Financial independence is freedom, so it’s important to teach your teen the core tenets, such as why saving is important, how to budget, and how a credit score works. From here, you can help them set up their bank accounts appropriately and explain the different types (ISAs, savings, etc).
Networking and Socialising
Networking and socialising are also key considerations, especially in the digital age.
Unfortunately, people are typically socialising less and spending more time online. This has the potential to be the beginning of social anxiety (otherwise known as social phobia), which can majorly hamper a person’s ability to function in the real world.
While you should never try and force your teen to go out, you should encourage them to spend time with their friends, join clubs, and volunteer; these are each crucial activities for forming connections with other people, and they may even present important networking opportunities they can use to further their ambitions.
Emotional Preparedness
Emotional preparedness (being as ready as possible for whatever life could throw at you) and strong mental constitution are the core of navigating the natural undulations of life. If they’re struggling with any mental health conditions – such as anxiety, depression, OCD, or something else – it’s crucial to encourage them to get help before they move into the adult world.
Mental health problems can be mitigated so that they don’t majorly affect a person’s life, but it’s important to nip them in the bud early. Beyond professional help, make sure you’re checking in with your teen as regularly as possible to see how they’re doing.
Wrapping Up
Hopefully, you’re now a little clearer on how to support your child into adulthood. There’s no way to fully prepare for the changes to come, but it’s also a very exciting time, and it’s your job to help your teen embrace that sentiment. Good luck!
