If you’re on the lookout for replacing your current technology, instead of going out to buy something completely new, why don’t you consider buying used technology instead? Whether it’s your laptop, your phone, or your Apple Watch, buying second hand technology could be everything that you need to do this year to be more sustainable in the way that you live.

If you’re replacing your technology, you get a chance to have a new experience with an upgrade or with a replacement that allows you to accomplish tasks that you couldn’t before. The trouble is that technology is not cheap. A new phone is often worth almost 10 times more than a second hand one. You can buy refurbished Apple watches for much less than a new one, too. You don’t have to rush out and order the latest and greatest technology if you’re looking for a switch. Used, pre-owned or refurbished technologies are out there for a reason, and there are so many more reasons to consider this approach than you think there are. Let’s take a look at some of the top reasons to choose used technology below.

  1. You likely don’t need much power. Are you just using a new computer for writing notes, or are you looking for a gaming computer? If you’re going for a gaming computer, there are so many refurbed options out there, but you can still buy new if that’s what you want to do. If you’re just looking for something to help you to write notes or to take to school, then a refurbished computer or laptop can be ideal for that.If you don’t need a full computer, then a laptop can work just as well.
  2. You’re looking to save money. So, you want to start with a new fitness routine for the new year, but you don’t want to spend the money on an Apple Watch. A refurbished Apple Watch can make a big difference to your wallet. Buying used or refurbished Apple Watches can save you hundreds of dollars, and at the low end, you can walk into any thrift store and walk out with a functional Apple Watch for around 100 bucks. 
  3. You want more life out of a product. Generally, a refurbished item of technology has been refurbished back to its factory settings. You’ll still find that it has a decent battery life, and you’ll still find that it’s been put back to the way it was before it was used. So why not continue to use it until it really can’t be used anymore? You want to get the maximum life out of any product, and if you’re buying refurbished or second hand, you’re giving a product a second go.
  4. You’re reducing environmental waste. So your goal this year is to be more sustainable, but you want to upgrade your technology. Consumer electronics are a massive source of environmental waste, and you don’t have to contribute to it. If you’re buying refurbished, you’re buying something that’s already been created, which means that you’re not contributing to the carbon footprint of the tech world.
