In this article we will have a look at How to Find a Satisfying Career.
When it comes the time to search for a new career or even enter one for the first time, there are plenty of priorities which people have. Of course, financial reward often comes near the top of the list, but a sense of personal job satisfaction is highly important as well. Not only this, many people want to feel like they are making some sort of difference to the world in their line of work. So, how do you go about finding these things? Well, this article aims to provide you with just a bit of guidance to help you on your way.
Personal Fit
The first thing that you need to consider before entering any line of work is whether or not it is going to be a good fit for you. Write down a list of your qualities and the sort of career paths that you think would match up well with them. If possible, speak to some people who are already working in that sector to get a better idea about what it is like from the inside. Even better, try to get some work experience in the field.
Immediate Impact
Next up, it is worth considering whether you are going to make an immediate impact in your career path or whether this won’t come for years. Of course, there are some jobs out there to check out in which you will be able to see the impact that you are making first-hand such as if you teach business online. Others will be more indirect but could still be beneficial. Ultimately, you need to think about whether you want to be working with people in need directly or looking at the bigger picture.
Later Impact
Most of the time, the immediate impact that you make in your chosen field is going to be secondary to what you could achieve in the future. So, look at the progression available to you in the job roles that you are considering. What sort of skills are you going to develop from them? What can you learn externally? Who can you learn from and emulate? If you really want to make a difference in your chosen career path, it is often done from the higher levels of management etc.
Narrow Down the Options
You may currently have several different options of potential careers in mind, but now is the time to start whittling down the options. The three previous points are all good ones to get you started. First of all, you need to think about how the job would fit your personality and individual skillset. Once you have determined this, you can then see how much of an immediate impact that you can make in the field. Perhaps more important to you is the later impact that you will make in the future. But you need to consider exactly what you need to learn and what skills you need to develop in order to find that much sought-after personally rewarding career that makes a difference.
Try Some Work Experience
You may think that you have a brilliant idea for a career that you could embark on, but if you have never worked in this area before, it is a good idea to try out some work experience so you can get a better idea of what the day to day working environment is like. If you do decide that this is the right path for you, work experience gives you the opportunity to make some connections and demonstrate to potential employers that you are willing to put in the hours to learn the job. Another option is to undertake an internship in this field, though these are often difficult to come by and require you to work for a low salary or even for free. But many of the most popular careers require you to work your way up from the bottom, so doing an internship could be a stepping stone.
Prepare Yourself for Your New Career
Just because you have settled on a career that you think will be perfect for you doesn’t mean that you will be able to get into it straight away. So, you need to start making preparations that will help you out. Start to tailor your resume to your new career path. Even if you don’t have any experience in this area, it is likely that you have developed some transferable skills through your previous work experience. If you are entering the world of work for the first time, you should describe how your education and general skill set makes you suited to the career you are going for.
Browse through job forums to find the different careers that are available to you. Perhaps through your research, you have found that you need to engage in further study, so you should start to explore the options that are available to you. If you think that you can go straight into a job, start to prepare your interview skills by presenting who you are and what you have to offer in clear and focused statements.
Hopefully, this quick guide has provided you with some inspiration about how you can enter a career that provides you with happiness and fulfillment. The first step that you need to take is to identify your skills and passions so that you can find a job that suits these things. If you are still struggling, it is worth speaking to a careers counsellor, taking a few quizzes, and chatting to people who work in various different jobs. You never know what you may find out. Try out some work experience to give you first-hand experience. Once you have found a path that is right for you, start taking steps to making your dream a reality.
